Fractal/Afro Curl Routine

Pre-Cleanse tip

IF YOU FIND YOUR CURLS DO NOT ABSORB WATER VERY WELL, TRY APPLYING YOUR CLEANSER ON DRY HAIR AS A PRE-CLEANSE TREATMENT IN A DOWNWARDS SMOOTHING MOTION A MINUTE OR SO PRIOR TO CLEANSING. THIS HELPS START THE HYDRATION PROCESS

Cleansing

On wet hair start off with your non-lathering cleanser(such as sham free hair and scalp cleanser) or a botanical conditioner(such as Terms and Conditions) and apply a generous amount of the cleanser to your fingertips, and apply evenly to your scalp.

WE DON’T USE SHAMPOO ON NATURAL HAIR(SHAM=A TRICK OR SOMETHING UNTRUE AND POO=THE BAD STUFF). IT WILL NOT LATHER, THIS IS NORMAL.

Ensure you massage this into your scalp vigorously. Remember this is not shampoo and treat it differently, this should be a ritual and not a chore. Play a song in the background and use this as your timer.

THE LATHER FROM SHAMPOO IS VERY STUBBORN AND IT OFTEN TIMES WILL REMAIN IN THE HAIR. THE EXTRA TIME YOU SPEND MASSAGING TO CLEANSE IS THE SAME TIME YOU’D BE SPENDING TO RINSE OUT ALL OF THE NASTY BUBBLES IN SHAMPOO

Rinse thoroughly, as you rinse, ensure you massage your scalp to dislodge any loose dirt particles that may be hiding in your locks, remember your cleanser will be full of the bad stuff so make sure to get it all out!

Hydrating

Take a generous amount of conditioner and apply evenly all over your soaking wet spirals. Using a gentle but firm smoothing motion with your thumb pressing lightly into the hair through to your index and middle finger glide down a section of your hair repeatedly until you feel most of the resistance going, make sure you smooth past the ends of your curls to get all of the shed hair out which will prevent excessive knotting, add the odd finger comb from time to time, you’ll soon learn what works best for you. If you come across a nasty patch of tangles add water before you add more product. At Curl Love, we find sham free hair and scalp cleanser works especially well as a conditioner replacement for hair types which are especially prone to knotting up due to its intense slip and rich hydrating properties, it even works as a leave in!

Add water to your conditioner and leave the rest in. If you prefer more volume then partially rinse it out, if you prefer a more contained look, or are new to the method, leave it all in.

Defining

If your curls, coils, and kinks are very frizz-prone, style your hair in sections while it is still soaking wet hair with a hydrating gel(such as Leave-in Lover by CurlyWorld). Apply in a praying hands motion or by raking it through your hair. If you prefer a more voluminous look, use a t-shirt or similar material fabric cloth to gently but firmly pat or scrunch some of the water out of your curls prior to styling, apply a lightweight, moisturising gel in a praying hands method and scrunch up to your scalp to encourage bounce and then gently shake your head upside down to make sure your curls are not too flat to your scalp.

Drying

Clip your roots using some two prong pin curl clips Pictures to be inserted here soon Diffuse, air dry or dry under a hood dryer.

Keep in mind that Diffusing will cause your curls to contract and appear shorter than they actually are. Air drying and a hood dryer will preserve length, you can find reasonably priced free-standing hood driers online.

Pin curl clips normally used for creating volume can be clipped onto the ends of your curls to weigh them down and create the illusion of length as your kinks and curls dry. Some people will use a couple of bobby pins and clip their hair to their clothes while it dries to create some stretch.

IF IT’S TOO HOT FOR YOUR SCALP, IT’S TOO HOT FOR YOUR HAIR. DON’T BE AFRAID OF USING GENTLE WARM AIR TO SPEED UP THE DRYING PROCESS!
